Email sent out by TAMSIN BOOKEY (LBTH officer) on the 'Phase 1' applications states that the Local History Library and Archives will be shutting down for 2 months for "...decluttering and rearrangement of the reading room...to provide more desks and seats for readers."

The 'reading room' is the Carnegie Reading Room built in 1906 after a gift from the Scottish/American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie made Bancroft Library a Carnegie Library.

The room opposite, originally part of the Vestry Hall, was until 2006 Bancroft's Lending Library. There is original material and background on the Library here and original photos of both upstairs library rooms on Bancroft Images. The history and the vision for the future of the Library is on the Vision page.
